Conditions Affecting Men’s Health

Men's health includes a broad range of physical, mental, and social well-being concerns that specifically affect men throughout their lives. Care for men goes beyond the mere absence of disease, focusing on optimizing overall health and quality of life.

Access to men’s healthcare is challenging due to a lack of awareness and barriers to treatment for male patients. At Level One Urgent Care, we strive to resolve the root cause of the problem rather than temporarily addressing symptoms while focusing on personalized care, education, support, and guidance for a healthy and fulfilled life.

Hypogonadism

Hypogonadism refers to low levels of testosterone, the primary male sex hormone. Although it can occur at any age, it's more common in older men.

The sex hormone (testosterone in men) is produced by sex glands called testes in men. Testosterone helps control secondary sex characteristics, such as testicular development and pubic hair growth. It also helps in sperm production.

Low testosterone levels can be due to an issue with the testes or the pituitary gland that controls them.

There are two main types of hypogonadism:

  • Primary hypogonadism: It occurs when there is a problem with the testicles, leading to inadequate testosterone production. Causes of primary hypogonadism may include genetic conditions, testicular injury, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or certain infections.
  • Secondary hypogonadism: This occurs due to a problem with the hypothalamus or the pituitary gland in the brain, which is responsible for signaling the testes to produce testosterone. Secondary hypogonadism causes may include pituitary tumors, head trauma, certain medications, or systemic diseases.

Symptoms of Hypogonadism

Symptoms of Hypogonadism may include:

  • Abnormal breast growth
  • Reduced growth of the penis and testicles
  • Reduced muscle mass
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Loss of bone mass
  • Infertility
  • Fatigue
  • Hot flashes
  • Loss of body hair
  • Decreased or absent sex drive
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Mood changes

Diagnosis & Treatment of Hypogonadism

At Level One Urgent Care, we diagnose hypogonadism by conducting laboratory tests to check your testosterone levels. Testosterone tests are typically done in the morning when your hormone levels are high.

We may also order a blood test to look for underlying causes and semen analysis to check your sperm count, as hypogonadism can reduce your sperm count.

We treat hypogonadism using testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), which is administered as a testosterone shot, patch, oral pill, or gel. It helps increase testosterone levels, improve sexual function, and enhance overall well-being and performance.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction refers to a common condition in which you experience a persistent inability to achieve or maintain penile erection for satisfactory sexual performance. Although it affects men of all ages, it becomes more common with age.

Experiencing occasional difficulties with achieving an erection is not necessarily a cause for concern. However, if it persists as a recurring challenge, it can induce stress, diminish self-assurance, and potentially strain relationships.

Causes & Symptoms of Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by a combination of physical, psychological, and lifestyle factors, including:

  • Underlying medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or neurological disorders
  • Hormonal imbalances, such as low testosterone levels
  • Psychological factors, including stress, anxiety, depression, or relationship issues
  • Side effects of certain medications, such as antidepressants and medications for prostate conditions
  • Lifestyle factors like smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, or drug use

The primary symptom of erectile dysfunction is trouble getting an erection. Other associated symptoms may include:

  • Reduced sexual desire
  • Premature ejaculation
  • Delayed ejaculation

Diagnosis & Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction

Along with a physical examination and assessing your medical and sexual history, we may recommend laboratory tests, such as blood counts, urinalysis, and lipid profile.

Our treatment for erectile dysfunction depends on the underlying cause and may include:

  • Lifestyle modifications: Reducing alcohol consumption, quitting smoking, losing weight, and exercising regularly can all help with the condition.
  • Medications: Oral medications can help treat erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow and allowing you to get an erection in response to sexual stimulation.
  • Hormone therapy: We may consider testosterone replacement therapy for men with low testosterone levels.

Low Libido

Low libido is a common condition characterized by a lack of or reduced desire for sexual activity. Sexual drive varies and fluctuates from person to person; thus, low libido can be temporary or long-term.

Causes & Symptoms of Low Libido

Low libido is influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. Along with aging, several other conditions and situations can lead to low libido, including:

  • Relationship issues, such as unresolved conflicts or intimacy issues
  • Underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes or thyroid disorders
  • Hormonal imbalances, such as low testosterone levels
  • Mental health conditions, including stress, anxiety, depression, or past trauma
  • Medications, such as antidepressants and hormonal contraceptives

Along with decreased interest in sexual activity, other symptoms may include:

  • Difficulty becoming aroused
  • Reduced frequency of sexual thoughts or fantasies
  • Avoidance of sexual encounters

Diagnosis & Treatment of Low Libido

After examining your medical and sexual history, our doctor may recommend a pelvic exam and laboratory and imaging tests to determine low libido.

Depending upon diagnosis, our treatment for low libido may include:

  • IV hydration therapy to increase libido
  • Medication adjustments
  • Stress management
  • Lifestyle modification
